Meet Ms. Del Rio

Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, ILL Ms. Del Rio was determined to come back to work in Chicago. Ms. Del Rio joined Phoenix STEM Military Academy’s English Department this August after graduating from the University of Illinois this past May.

As a student in high school, Ms. Del Rio took most of her classes as a part of  a dual enrollment program, which helped earn her associate’s degree at Daley’s City College.

Del Rio completed her student teaching at Champaign Central High School and Urbana High School. Her experience as a teacher has been different  due to her student teaching being online because of Covid.  For a month or so she worked with the seniors as their English teacher, but will be teaching juniors starting Quarter 2.

Ms. Del Río has enjoyed a couple of things at Phoenix including the structure, the school motto and  how supportive the staff are with students.

“I enjoy working with the seniors and miss them, I think you guys are really smart,” said Ms. Del Río.

The few weeks that she spent with her classes she was able to get to know some of the seniors and believes that they are talented people. Ms. Del Rio’s main goal is to get to know her students.

“One regret is not getting to know students before teaching right away because it made it harder for me to understand why students aren’t getting work done,” said Del Rio.

In the future, Ms. Del Rio hopes to get to know each and every student as much as possible to understand the life of a student. She will be teaching four sections of English III and one section of Humanities starting in quarter two.
