Silver Medalist

Phoenix Military Academy was awarded a Silver Medal for their yearbook and website The Phoenix Chronicle news site from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Gold Medalists are given for total scores from 800 to 1,000 points\; Silver Medalists, from 600 through 799 points\; and Bronze Medalists, 599 points and below. The judges write out comments and make constructive suggestions for building on current strengths and correcting deficiencies noted in the critique. The Phoenix Chronicle received 790 points, just 10 points away from the gold level.
“I thought it was pretty cool to get an award for something that I just started doing,” said senior Damien Ponce.
The students as well as Mrs. Fernandez put in a lot of time on the yearbook and Phoenix Chronicle.
“I would say that sometimes 4 hours a week but when deadlines are coming to a close a lot of the work stacks up and leads to more than 4 hours,” said senior Andres Vargas.
Although the students put many hours towards the yearbook and the Phoenix Chronicle, they really enjoy what they do.
“I enjoy journalism and what it does, keeping everyone up to date on news from sports to politics and allowing people to be informed,” said Ponce.
Vargas agreed with Ponce.
“Something I enjoy is getting to work with my peers and helping them out in order to put good content for the Phoenix Chronicle and yearbook,” said Vargas
This award even gave some seniors an interest in pursuing journalism after high school.
“It definitely became an option that I would be interested in pursuing after highschool,” said Ponce.
