Amongst the Big Dogs

For the third year in a row, the wrestling team competed at state. Coach Curin is very proud of his team and what they have been able to do in his three years running the program and hopes to keep going further.
“It felt like where I belonged with the top dogs, being at state gave me that mental challenge of who wants it more, it felt amazing,” said senior Omar Perez.
Curin is happy with his team and the work they have put in to be ranked so highly.
“I love this team and everyone who has sacrificed to build it. We have the hardest working athletes at PMA. What these kids accomplished not only this year but over the 3 years I have been coach is nothing short of amazing,” said Curin.
The wrestling team moved into the highest conference in CPS and won this year ending Kelly High School’s 15 year reign. They are turning heads and people know who they are.
“ The team was a failing program. The senior class this year worked for 3 years to put this program on the highest stage. They have been the heart and soul that this program was built around. We had our first state qualifiers , first city champions, 2 conference titles in school history,” said Curin.
The seniors who competed at state were Kevin Rodriguez, Martin Martinez, Luis Gonzalez and Omar Perez. Only one junior made it to state – Jalyne Gorree. Even though the team will lose some of its talent next year because of graduation they still expect to place high and do well at their events with their future talent.
“Next year I expect to continue our rise. We will suffer a huge leadership loss through graduation, but I feel like we have the talent and character in our underclassmen to fill that void and to continue to build on the progress and momentum that has become the status quo for Phoenix Military Academy wrestling,” said Curin.
The wrestling team plans on dominating the wrestling scene, keeping up the reputation they have built, and going even further than what they have already done. Coach Curin finished off by saying “STATE OR BUST!”.
