Over Christmas break, the boys basketball team ,both Varsity and Junior Varsity, participated in a basketball tournament in Elmhurst, Illinois. Monday of December 26 the team along with coaches Lorenzo Donegan and Jamal Dantzler, prepared at Phoenix Military Academy and began their journey to victory.
For the next three days PMA’s basketball team gained new knowledge and establish a team bond according to Coach Donegan A.K.A “ Coach Lo”.
“ we first arrived at the Marriott Hotel and we stayed in our rooms for a little then headed to the gym where our tournament was held. We watched a few teams play while we waited for our team to begin warming up,” said senior Gregory Boyle
Each member had to give a deposit of $55 that covered their stay and food along with spending money. Along with getting prepared to play in a three day tournament, the team developed a bond and grew attached to one another.
Senior Jamell Gooden said “ By being away from home and other distractions the team was able to get to know each other better and share some funny memories,”
The team played a total of four games during the three day tournament. The ending score was 2-2, meaning that they won two games but lost two games. Senior Gregory Boyle had an outstanding performance averaging 33 points a game.
“ It felt like a state playoff game because the atmosphere was more significant compared to a regular game. It made me feel like this was the last game of the season because it was go hard or go home,”Gooden said.
Overall the whole team learned new ways to improve themselves and are prepared to get more wins for the rest of their season.
