CHEATING

Erik Bernabe

There was a time when cheating was rare in schools, but today the “importance of learning” aspect has been eliminated. School exists so that we will be educated, not so everyone can cheat their way into being successful. Instead, everyone is focused on making the top ten percent of their class, no matter how they get there.

This really bothers me because they probably will never stop to think how bad it truly is. When you cheat, you learn nothing, which is why cheating is so serious. I think that cheating should be allowed sometimes, but to a certain point where it doesn’t happen everyday.

Today a lot of students don’t view cheating as something wrong and continue to do it on a daily basis. Many students decide to cheat because they do not do their work or do not pay attention in class, and the best thing for them is to copy off a friend and turn in the work for credit. Also many students nowadays cheat because they find the work given useless.

I have come to an understanding that others may think differently when it comes to cheating. Some believe that people who cheat should be given harsher penalties while others think that what they are doing is right. Our society today seems to believe that the more material wealth you have, the more successful you are. When cheating the grades come easier and good grades lead to a better GPA, and etc.

Most people think that cheating on one test does not mean that you will cheat again. Unfortunately this is not true because if you can get away with it once, you are likely to do it again. Cheating has become a cycle where students find it easier and faster to not pay attention in class and just copy the work for credit.

I am not saying that people who cheat are wrong are wrong for stealing other people’s work, because just about everyone in the whole school including me has cheated off of someone.

What I am trying to say is that cheating should be considered bad upon kids and should receive harsh penalties. This is not something every student wants to hear, but I truly believe that if cheating was treated in a more harsh manner student will actually start focusing in school and learning.
