Will Atletico Madrid go Trophyless this season?

At the start of the season, Atletico Madrid fans expected their team to improve on the average season they had last year. They were 3rd in the league and eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid in the quarter finals. 11 months later, they sit third in the league, and only Real Madrid stand in the way of their first Champions League trophy.

Atletico Madrid have become a difficult team to beat over the years and under their coach, Diego Simeone, the team looks set to achieve great things. Simeone has been credited for establishing a solid defense that has arguably been the heart of this magnificent Atletico side.

“Simeone has been able to buy great players at bargain prices. For example, Diego Godin was purchased for eight million euros and Jose Maria Gimenez for only one million euros. Both players are very talented and it just shows that Simeone rather buy players to develop than to buy players that are already established,” said junior David Marroquin.

So if Atletico is so good, why have they been struggling to win a trophy? Atletico are now out of the title race with the loss to levante on May 8th, which means they only have one more honour to fight for, The Champions League. The last time they were in a Champions League final, they were embarrassed 4-1 by the same team they will be playing on May 28th, Real Madrid.

“Atletico Really disappointed this weekend by losing to Levante. Many of us thought that they were going to compete for the title until the last day but the pressure has got to them. Now they should focus on the Champions League because Real Madrid is never an easy team to beat,” said junior Carlos Romero.

If Atletico do not want to go trophyless this season, they have to work hard to overcome Real Madrid and forget about what happened the last time they played in the final. Many expectations are now on the 2013-2014 La liga Champions and now it’s up to the team to decide their faith.
